Nostalgia Is Not What It Used To Be.

Recommended Posts

The wife was taking down the net curtains to wash them, and we got to talking what our mothers did with the nets. Mine used to wash them in the twin tub and add a bag of blue for the last rinse and they would come out whiter than new.

That got me thinking, can you still buy bags of blue? Apparently you can but they are not cheap. A lot of the old favourites are here, come into my Palmolive, not on your Lifebuoy.

Those of us who are "of a certain age" will recognise one of these....

Wife does the youngest granddaughter loves it. The eldest hates it but she is 18.   TC

Can recall bath time in 50's having a scrub down in the kitchen sink in a couple of inches of tepid water, kitchen was referred to as a scullery. Always tried to be first for the scrub as by the time

Years ago the way women talked of carbolic soap you'd have thought it would cure cancer.

You mentioned the old washing machines and it reminded me of an old timer who's favourite saying was "The last time I laughed this much was when granny caught her tits in the mangle," LOL.

Wright's Coal Tar soap ! Used to love the smell of that !!

When my daughter was little, she got a few chest infections, and we used to burn coal tar oil in a candle vaporiser thingie. The whole house smelt of it....... gorgeous !

(And I'll bet nobody washes the kids in the kitchen sink any more, either.....)

Normally just throw them in the machine lol.

But when we wanted nets there was one fabric shop kept it on a roll, about £30 a metre and extra to make a pair up plus coupłe weeks wait, went on Amazon prime ordered set of net curtains delivered next day under £20 notes.

The good Lady BB once took all the nets down to be washed. She gave them to me and said to put them in the kitchen. So, obviously, I put them in the washing machine - she went mental ! She reckons it ruins them.....warm water, with a bit of Glo White only.

If I do the hoovering, washing up - anything - she does it again. Apparently, I don't "do it right". Ive given up trying to understand.

We had an outside toilet and a tin bath, hanging up outside the back door, til I was 10 or 12 years old.

When my grandad died, he left my mum some money and we had an extension built, with the first bathroom in our street ! Neighbours all came round to have a look, like it was a tourist attraction !
